Indicative Syllabus for Junior Engineer (Civil)

Paper I: Building materials, Estimating, Costing and Valuation, Surveying, Soil Mechanics, Hydraulics, Transportation Engineering, Environmental Engineering.

(i) Building Materials: This section covers the physical and chemical properties, classification, standard tests, uses, and manufacturing/quarrying of various building materials. Topics include building stones, silicate-based materials, cement (Portland), asbestos products, timber and wood-based products, laminates, bituminous materials, paints, and varnishes.

(ii) Estimating, Costing, and Valuation: This section focuses on estimating the cost of construction projects. It includes the glossary of technical terms, analysis of rates, methods and units of measurement. Specific topics covered include earthwork, brickwork (modular & traditional bricks), RCC work, shuttering, timber work, painting, flooring, plastering, boundary wall, brick building, water tank, septic tank, bar bending schedule, center line method, mid-section formula, trapezoidal formula, Simpson’s rule, cost estimate of various structures, and methods of valuation.

(iv) Soil Mechanics: This section focuses on the properties and behavior of soil. Topics covered include the origin of soil, phase diagram, definitions of various parameters, grain size distribution curves, index properties of soils, permeability of soil, aquifers, consolidation of soils, shear strength of soils, soil compaction, earth pressure theories, and bearing capacity of soils.

(v) Hydraulics: This section deals with the properties of fluids and their application in engineering. Topics include hydrostatics, measurements of flow, Bernoulli’s theorem, flow through pipes, flow in open channels, weirs, flumes, spillways, pumps, and turbines.

(vi) Transportation Engineering: This section covers the design and construction of highways and transportation systems. Topics include cross-sectional elements, geometric design, pavement materials, design of flexible and rigid pavements, pavement maintenance, highway drainage, and various aspects of transportation engineering.

(vii) Environmental Engineering: This section focuses on water supply, sanitation, sewerage systems, sewage treatment, surface water drainage, solid waste management, air pollution, and noise pollution. Paper II: Theory of Structures, Concrete Technology, RCC Design, and Steel Design

Topics include elasticity constants, types of beams (determinate and indeterminate), bending moment and shear force diagrams for simply supported, cantilever, and overhanging beams. It also covers moment of area and moment of inertia for rectangular and circular sections, bending moment and shear stress for tee, channel, and compound sections. Other topics include chimneys, dams, retaining walls, eccentric loads, slope deflection of beams, critical load and columns, and torsion of circular sections.

(iii) RCC Design: This section focuses on the design of reinforced concrete structures. Topics covered include flexural strength, shear strength, and bond strength of RCC beams. It includes the design of singly reinforced and doubly reinforced beams, cantilever beams, T-beams, lintels, one-way and two-way slabs, isolated footings, reinforced brickwork, columns, staircases, retaining walls, and water tanks. The RCC design questions may be based on both the Limit State and Working Stress methods.
